MANILA, Philippines — The Senate Committee on Women, Children and Family Relations will immediately probe the “alarming” rise in teenage pregnancies in the country, the panel’s chairman said Thursday.
Senator Risa Hontiveros, chair of the committee, said several senators have filed separate resolutions calling for a Senate investigation into “alarming teen pregnancies.” She vowed that the matter will be “heard at the Senate immediately.”
MANILA, Philippines — As a mother, the issues that exploded and reached my office early in 2020 really hit home.
As we prepared for the 18th birthday party of my youngest daughter, I remembered Carina, the 15-year-old girl who was prostituted inside a Philippine offshore gaming operator (Pogo) sex den.
MANILA – Senator Risa Hontiveros on Monday said she will propose provisions on the budget of the Department of Finance (DOF) to give incentives to local government units (LGUs) when they borrow from banks and financial lenders to help the national government in financing local projects.
During the Senate deliberations on Monday, Hontiveros said she will propose two special provisions for the DOF budget — one of which will introduce a condition requiring LGUs to raise funds and “match” the grants they receive from the national government with a ratio of 1:2, or P1 from LGU for every P2 received from the national government.
In 1972, she was six years old and inseparable from her cousins.
During family reunions at her uncle’s house, the cousins would do their best to delay their journey home. They knew if they stayed past curfew, their families had to spend the night, and they could have a pajama party.
Outside her cousin’s room was a balcony. She would sneak there late in the evening and spy on the adults. She would watch the food from above—a lazy susan turning clockwise and then counter-clockwise—and overhear a political conversation that, over the years, “inexorably turned opposition.”
“It was an unintentional intergenerational exchange,” she says. “I don’t think our parents, uncles, and aunts were conscious that we were listening in on them from above.”
Senator Risa Hontiveros urged Filipino women to continue fighting for equality as the country observes the National Women’s Month this March.

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Risa Hontiveros has filed a bill that would institutionalize free 144 dialysis sessions for Filipino senior citizens.
Currently, the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) covers 90 dialysis sessions, but Hontiveros said her bill would cover the complete 144 sessions needed for a complete year of treatment.
